Drive Left or Right

Are you wondering, which countries drive on the left vs. which drive on the right side of traffic (road)? When you travel abroad, you first want to find out, whether you should rent a car or use public transportation. If you do decide to rent a car, make sure you know what side of the road to drive on, before you take to the roads. Also, always double check with the car rental agency (if in confusion).

Driving Fun Facts

The Romans first introduced riding (then “driving”) on the left and this was the case throughout the entire Roman empire. This fact was recently established during the discovery of a North England Roman quarry. The wheel ruts were light and shallow on the left going into the quarry and deep on the right coming out of the quarry.

When Napoleon came into the power in France, he banned left-hand driving thinking it was an English thing. He changed it to driving on the right throughout his vast empire.

Most countries which were British colonies still drive on the left-hand side of the road including huge land masses such as India, Australia, Southern Africa, and as well as the Caribbean Islands.

There are 76 countries, territories, and dependencies which drive on the left.

Most Europian and South American countries generally drive on the right-hand side apart from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Malta, Cyprus, and Guyana.

Almost two-thirds of the countries (66% of the world’s population) drive on the right side of the road including the USA, France, China, Mexico, and Russia.

Canada used to drive on the left but changed to the right to make border crossings with the USA more manageable.
