Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark. It is also its most populous city. It is on the eastern side of the island of Zealand. In the 10th century, it was a Viking fishing village.
Copenhagen has been a popular tourist destination for people around the world. It has been a major center of development in Europe and is also a main financial center. Many prestigious universities and schools are here, including the University of Copenhagen. This university was founded in 1479.
Tourism is a major sector of the city’s economy. Copenhagen attracts travelers, due to its cultural and historical heritage, and a picturesque harbor. Over the recent years, Copenhagen has become one of the fastest growing metropolitan tourist destinations in Europe.
Apart from being the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen also plays a role of cultural capital, not only for Denmark but the whole Scandinavia as well. The city has numerous cultural and historical sites, unique architecture and popular tourist spots.
The statue of Little Mermaid is the most recognizable tourist attraction and the icon of Copenhagen. The city is also known for its horizontal skyline, which is only broken by the towers and spires of its castles and churches. The most famous is the Baroque spire of the Church of Our Savior. Also noticeable, are the spires of Christiansborg Palace, the City Hall and the former church of St. Nicolas.
Natural attractions of Copenhagen include the King’s Garden, the Botanical Gardens, the Frederiksberg Gardens, and the Langelinie. Also, the Copenhagen Zoo is the largest zoo in Denmark.
The city also boasts a wide variety of different museums for any taste. For example, the National Museum is the largest museum of archeology and cultural history in the country. And the National Gallery offers its visitors collections of art from the XII century till modern times. Other museums include Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Louisiana, the museum of modern art, the Cisternernerne museum and the Ordrupgaard Museum.
