UNESCO World Heritage Sites

A World Heritage Site is a protected landmark or structure which is selected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as having a significant cultural, historical, scientific or other forms of significance and is legally protected by international treaties.

The sites are democratically nominated, judged, and selected based on the importance to the collective interests of humanity.

Any new nomination must already be recognized as a famous landmark and unique in some respect. Examples can be a historically identifiable place having special cultural significance or an ancient ruin, historical structure, a lost city, monument, or mountain, island, forest or a desert.
