How Do You Eat and Stay Vegan While Traveling

From Miami, Florida to the Pacific Northwest, down to the Caribbean, to all the way to the Baltics, and back down south in the good ole US, we have found amazing vegan eats.

Come on a plant-based journey across the world with us and let us inspire you!

A delicious vegan burger

Miami, Florida

To start, let’s say when you think of South Beach, Miami, and all of the food options there, you might not think of it as being a vegan-friendly destination. But, when we spent a weekend in Miami, we found it to be a vegan paradise. 🙂

We went to the hip, graffiti-covered neighborhood of Wynwood to find a couple of spots. We started off at Charley’s Vegan Taco’s CVT.

Charley’s Vegan Taco’s

This hip taco shop with a beautiful mural inside offers quite a big menu of vegan treats. The vibe was cozy as soon as you walked in the door.

It was originally started in Tulum, Mexico. Someday, we will have to make our way down to the original and report back as to which one is better!

We started off with the Mushroom Ceviche – Oyster mushrooms, sunflower seeds, avocado, garlic aioli, and cilantro sprouts.

We spent a whole summer in 2019 trying ceviche all around the states, and this version was the best we had. It was the most flavorful and creative out of any.

We then moved on to our entree portion of the meal. We decided we would share a burrito and an order of tacos.

We ordered the El Diablo burrito.

We had been craving burritos recently so this one hit the spot. It came with Abuelita’s rice, black beans, chorizo, chicharron prensado, fried plantain, jalapeños, shredded lettuce, onion, maldita sauce, garlic aioli, creamy green salsa.

The Plantains in it were a game-changer, as they always are, they added a beautiful sweetness to the spice of the Jalapenos. Such good flavor all through every bite.

For our Tacos we chose the Carne Sin Carne option. Which came with 3 tacos.

  • Chicharron Prensado Taco – porkles cracklings stewed in red morita pepper sauce, served with fresh mango chutney, garlic aioli, onion cilantro
  • Chicharron Verde Taco – porkless cracklings stewed in green tomatillo salsa, topped with vegan creme, onion, cilantro
  • Jackfruit pulled “Pork” Taco – jackfruit in ancho pepper adobo with shredded lettuce, cured red onion, vegan creme, and creamy green salsa.

These tacos were beyond incredible. I think my favorite was the Jackfruit pulled “pork”, such an incredible flavor profile.

Overall this experience was amazing. The vibe inside is fantastic and the staff is really wonderful.

We met the head chef Bryan, he introduced himself and gave some insight into the dishes and then went back to making delicious foods. After a few minutes, he came back out to check on us and our meals to make sure we were enjoying ourselves and our food.

Very cool! Highly recommend this spot.

L’Artisane Bakery

Our next food adventure took us to North Miami Beach and L’Artisane Bakery. This place is beyond incredible. With pastries and sandwich options there is something for everyone and every hunger level.

We ended up going here two mornings in a row, with a pop in on our way back to our hotel after the beach because it was so good.

Our personal favorite was the Guava & Cream Cheese danish. A must at the bakery, the sweet and savory flavor is impossible to resist. We definitely could not and are still craving it all this time later.

Our first visit to the bakery we shared the VTE ”Vegan Travel Eats” Croissant, a beautiful breakfast sandwich with hash brown, sausage patty, Just Egg patty, shiitake bacon & aji amarillo aioli. What an amazing treat. Everything you want from a sandwich to start off your day all in one.

On our second visit, we decided to get a couple of sandwiches along with our guava and cream cheese danish.

We went with… Wild Mushrooms Croissant: this came with sautéed wild mushrooms, fresh thyme, black truffles foam, vegan parmesan cheese, mushrooms crumble.

This is such a beautifully savory sandwich and we highly recommend it. We were sad to see the last bite go.

Croque Monsieur Croissant: this came with vegan deli ham and was so delectable and delicious. If you have ever had this kind of sandwich you will be blown away by how good this one is.

Overall L’Artisane Bakery is one of the best options we have found for vegan food and pastries. It is a smaller yet cozy shop so it can be hard to find a table. But as we did on our first visit it is well worth taking it to go and eat while enjoying North Miami Beach just a short walk away.

British Columbia

Let’s go out now to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, getting here was a beautiful journey by ferry from Seattle. I definitely did not plan on getting seasick on the ride over, I highly suggest bonine or the free motion sickness medication they offer before you leave. Just in case!

One might not think I was excited or ready to get food. But quite the opposite, I was so excited to hit land and walk to get our first meal in Victoria! We dropped our luggage off in our rental car and wandered over to…

The Very Good Butchers

The Very Good Butchers in a food hall/market right in downtown this is by far the best butcher I have been to. It is a fully functional butcher shop. They butcher beans, so you can get your deli needs taken care of and order from a small menu of hot dishes they have at the shop.

Using mostly beans in their patties and their dogs. The flavor and texture that they have created is unreal.

This ended up being our favorite of the trip and kind of ruling our trip eating and snacking game. In our time in Victoria, we tried out…

Jackfruit Poutine: This poutine was no joke the best poutine I have had… hands down. The bbq sauce on the pulled jackfruit was so good and smoky. Fries cooked to perfection and the curds were even better here!

Mac N’ Cheeze: This was an extra cheezy mac with bread crumbs and we added jackfruit to it. Everything you want in a mac n cheeze.

We also got these deli options to go…Bangers in a Blanket: One of their delicious British style bangers wrapped in their homemade dough and cooked to perfection!

Pizza Pocket: A square pocket of goodness, It is stuffed with their homemade marinara sauce and their homemade pepperoni. What an awesome treat.

Meatball Sub: What a tasty meatball sub! On homemade focaccia roll with their cheese strips. Good to grab for a delicious on the go meal.

The portions here are way bigger but I would not recommend sharing, it is too good to only get one option!

Nassau, Bahamas

Let us take you to a small cozy spot in Nassau Bahamas! As the locals say you have to go up and over the hill from the tourist spot to get here.

Locals might also think you are druggies wandering here but they are very friendly, just be careful and keep your wits about you, and maybe do not go at night.

Eat Right Delight

This small but cozy restaurant in King David Nassau, Bahamas is a hidden gem for sure. When you enter you come into the very small dining and take out area and the menu is on the wall.

They always have specials running, so make sure to ask what the special of the day is! It has a small bench for you to sit on while you await your delicious food. Then on the wall by the window, there are two stools set up with a small shelf/table to eat on.

Once you decide what you are going to order you peek your head in through a small hole in the glass that looks into the kitchen.

Everything is made as you order by Shanique so it takes a little while but it is well worth the wait. As we were hanging out and waiting for our food we met two really great locals who turned out to be friends of ours to this day. Like our friend Cliff Riley, pictured below, a Bahamian singer sharing beautiful positivity, who sang to us while waiting for his food!

With Cliff Riley, Bahamian singer

So many good conversations happen around food. These were a couple of the best. The chef/owner Shanique is incredibly nice as well. She is always smiling as she cooks for you. I cannot wait to return to this place!

Every person who walked in the door was greeted with a smile. Most of the locals that came in seemed to know her and how delicious her food is.

Note: If you are arriving in Nassau on a cruise ship, it is walkable, around a 35-minute walk. If you walk to the market street and take a left and keep walking you will find it!

I would also recommend downloading maps.me from your app store if you have not for and downloading the map of Nassau while you are in town! Stay on the main road, Market street, on your way. Once you get there. Enjoy!

We asked Shanique to make us something she wanted us to try and to remember this place by. I am pretty sure it was a variation of the…

Thai noodles – these noodles she brought out to us had such incredible flavor. Covered in beautiful veggies and another one of her sauce creations.

We also got to sample a sliver of her pizza and it was really incredible! Thinking about it right now makes me hungry!

On our second time back, on the Keeping the Blues Alive At Sea cruise, we ordered her Spaghetti with “meat” sauce.

This was the best spaghetti we have ever had. The sauce was incredible. We did not ask for the secret ingredient that made it so tasty but we are pretty sure it had some cinnamon in it.

Everything she makes is light, we did not leave feeling too full. We felt quite good even after scarfing down the whole dish.

Spicy Mushroom Sliders (another special) – These little sliders packed so much flavor. From every bite, our noses ran and we got more and more sad every bite knowing this amazing food journey would end.

The spice mixed with her mushroom patties is one hell of a mixture. Just hope she has these when you walk in!

This is such a special spot. Feeding the folks of Nassau incredibly good food that is healthy! We cannot wait to return so we can try some more delicious food! A really special restaurant.

Tallinn, Estonia

Next stop is Tallinn, Estonia, one of our favorite cities we have been to. It has incredible history and architecture from the 1500s. Anything from castles, to modern buildings to communist-era all concrete builds. You can find it all in Tallinn. Old meets new and is bustling with tech. One of the tech capitals of Europe actually.

You have more than likely used one of their biggest contributions to tech and communication… Skype.

More than anything the people of Estonia are kind and welcoming, they want to show you how great their country is and show you a fantastic time. They also share the love with their food.

We found a few amazing options but our favorite by far was Tru Kitchen, we went twice and made friends with the owner and a few of the staff. We genuinely miss our friends and the wonderful food they shared with us.

Tru Kitchen

Tru Kitchen is outside of Oldtown Tallinn, about a 15-minute walk. It is in an old industrial-looking warehouse, which by the time we go again I am sure will be hip and painted in some funky way. When you walk in you are immediately transported to another place.

Plants all over, a few couches along the wall, incredible music vibes, and super friendly Estonians ready to help you out. The owner, Kristo Rosenvald, became a friend of ours very quickly.

Each time we came in he personally greeted us and had nice conversations as long as he could. Then there was the food, what dreams are made of.

Pita Sandwitch (their spelling) – Normally I would not have ordered this sandwitch except that the owner and a few other of our new friends told us it was the favorite menu item. Naturally we had to try and holy hell we were not disappointed, until the end, when it was gone of course.

Served with Voner (a vegan version of doner), roasted carrots, portobello, and a miso mayonnaise. It left us wanting to get 5 more for our journey, but we were too full and let it be a dream to have again.

Tumeric Chickpea omelet was our introduction to beetroot. It was used at every vegan restaurant in the baltic states and is incredibly good. Along with beetroot it came with pickled fennel and green pesto. Another simple dish done perfectly and just bursting with flavor. From the first bite I was sad watching it disappear with every bite.

Grand Leaven Breakfast Sandwitch (their spelling) – this sandwitch comes on local bread from a bakery right across the alley from Tru, it is remarkable how fresh it is. Topped with Kimchi, a perfectly cooked portobello, an avocado, and vegan cheese and served open face, this sandwitch has so much flavor in every bite.

Its only flaw is that it is hard to concentrate on what part is the best because it is all so incredible. 🙂

After our few times here to chat, eat, have tea, and play backgammon, we felt right at home. We had a hard time leaving this magical city.

We will be back and when we do, the first place we will head to is Tru to see our friends and share a beautiful meal.

Traveling Europe in January we noticed a trend in a lot of locals, Veganuary, this was a lot of Europeans way to start off the year with a nice cleanse for their body.

Even though we were seeking out these type restaurants, a lot of others had a couple of special dishes in order to meet Veganuary’s needs. It makes it more accessible to travelers who might be in a mixed travel party of vegans and non-vegans.

Nashville, Tennessee

Last but not least, come on back with us to our hometown of Nashville, Tennessee. A city full of incredible cuisine, maybe not so known for their vegan offerings.

The Southern V

One restaurant, in particular, The Southern V, will keep you far from feeling deprived of wonderful Southern cookin’. Open since 2017 in the location they are in now they aim to be the staple for southern cuisine in Nashville! Their menu has so many amazing options but these were our favorites.

Nashville Hot “Chicken” – This seitan based Hot chicken is incredible. The spice they bring is hot enough for you to feel it but not be overwhelmed. As a staple in Nashville cuisine this dish is up there with any in the city, better I would think!

BBQ Jackfruit Nachos – This beautiful “American” sized plate of jackfruit nachos was out of this world. Enough jackfruit to cover any chip you can find under the beautiful toppings. Mix and match the veggies you would like and enjoy this incredible dish.

Turnip Greens – Whoa! Talk about flavor, these greens will blow you away. Incredible spice and flavor will make you sad when they are gone.

Mac N “Cheese” – This mac was some of the best I have ever had, and believe me as a picky eating kid Mac N’ Cheese was one of my few food groups that I ate out of. The thick and creamy sauce with amazing texture and taste. Your friends who are scared of vegan food would never know the difference, probably would say this was better.

Southern V has all the fixings you are looking for in a down south meal right here in Nashville.

Conclusion

I think people get the wrong idea when it comes to veganism. What you have to give up, what you miss out on. But in fact, you are not missing out on anything.

Chefs work that much harder to get past the stigma to get people into the restaurant and then make incredibly creative and delicious food to keep people coming in.

We have found some of the most creative food while traveling and experienced a rich culture within the vegan community.

No matter where you travel there is always somewhere to find a plant-based meal if you look hard enough, and that looking is part of the fun and beautiful way to get to know the culture where you find yourself.

We hope you enjoyed our plant-based wander around the world! Peace signs up!

Top 10 Coronavirus Free Destinations: Travel After Covid19

Note: Since this is an ongoing situation, we’ll be updating this article every day! Last updated: March 16, 2020.

If you are like me, you must be anxious about when this Coronavirus mess will end and when your life would get back to normal! Well, worry not because like everything in nature, nothing goes on forever and this too shall pass away!

Microscopic photo of Coronavirus. The spikes on the outer edge of the virus resemble a crown thus giving it that name.

At the time of this writing, the virus has spread to over 160 countries and territories. Therefore, for now, we strongly recommend that you maintain social distancing, stay put in your home, save some money, catch up on great books, finish those binge-worthy TV shows, and start that passion project of yours that you always wanted to do!

Note: Do Not Travel Right Now (even if you can, because you may not show any symptoms and therefore can carry the virus with you and infect the otherwise isolated population and other people at higher risk. Please use common sense and exercise patience.)

Summer 2020

Let’s say, coronavirus gets under control (maybe even completely gone) and we are all in the clear. Also, let’s say if you have been itching to get out of your town and you are ready to travel, the first thing to check would be any still-remaining effective travel restrictions.

Assuming most of the travel restrictions have now been lifted (let’s say by May 2020), below are our top 10 recommended destinations which are either Covid19 free or with only foreign cases (i.e. no community transmission reported).

Antarctica

We have traveled to 6 continents so far and Antarctica has been on our list for a long time now. Well, keep in mind though if you live in the northern hemisphere (US, Canada, Europe, etc.), your winter month is summer-time in Antarctica.

So, why not visit a place which has no permanent human settlement and no cases of Coronavirus!

Big Island, Hawaii

Although Hawaii (Oahu) has cases of Coronavirus, all of them except one were imported. There are no reported cases of Coronavirus cases in the islands of Kuai, Maui, and Big Island.

Madagascar

The isolated environment, which Madagascar hosts, makes for exotic flora and fauna. The biodiversity that is present here is unique, in comparison to anywhere else in the world.

If you ever visit Madagascar, you will fall in love with the island’s plants and animals, which exist nowhere else in the world.

So far there has been no positive cases of Coronavirus here and therefore makes it a safe destination to visit.

Galapagos Islands

You may have heard of the Galapagos Islands from Charles Darwin’s voyage. It is a remote volcanic archipelago in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Ecuador. It’s considered one of the world’s foremost destinations for wildlife viewing.

The isolated terrain of Galapagos makes this island a heavenly shelter for a diversity of plant and animal species, many of which are not found anywhere else in the world.

Reunion Island

Just at 134 kilometers, southwest of Mauritius lies the magical destination, Reunion Islands. It abounds in volcanic scenery and the tropical climate makes it a beautiful getaway for travelers.

Furthermore, Reunion’s magnificent volcanic landscape makes it a paradise for hikers. With little to no crowd and the remoteness of this destination, nothing gets safer than this island in the Indian Ocean.

Mongolia

Well, if North Korea has open borders then they would have been severely impacted just like South Korea and since they are a closed border country, they seem to be doing fine at this time of the global pandemic.

But Why am I talking about North Korea! Because it’s not easy to go there and it may not be on your travel bucket list. But, Mongolia might be.

And if it gives you any reassurance then know that just a few weeks after the first coronavirus case was announced in China on December 31, 2019, Mongolia announced they would be closing the borders with China. They were the second country to do so, after North Korea.

They have had Covid19 cases but if it’s among the isolated, less crowded countries in Central Asia and therefore a safer place to visit compared to any other country in that region.

Alaska

Alaska announced its first case of Coronavirus on March 12 (much after the rest of the US). Furthermore, the case happened to a foreign tourist. So far, Alaska due to its remoteness and harsh winter condition has been safe from Covid19.

Greenland

Like Alaska, Greenland reported its first case of coronavirus on March 16 with a person with travel history. That said, in the western hemisphere, remote places like Alaska and Greenland are safer destinations as compared to densely populated cities of Europe and North America.

I wish we could say the same about Iceland. We’ll continue to monitor the situation in Iceland and update this blog if it seems to be a safer place to visit in 2020.

Nepal

Nepal has only reported one case of coronavirus (a student who traveled from Wuhan, China). Since then the student has recovered and there has been no additional cases of coronavirus reported in Nepal.

Given that there are active Covid19 cases in both neighboring India and Pakistan, I would wait a few more weeks to see how the situation progresses in South Asia. Also, note, like Nepal, Bhutan has only reported 1 case and there have been no cases reported from Bangladesh.

Islands of the Caribbean

Most of the tiny island countries in the Caribbean have been either coronavirus-free or with less than 5 cases at maximum. The hot and humid climate definitely helps this region.

However, we recommend flying instead of taking a cruise for now until everything settles down. The point is to minimize human contact. Both flights and cruise have their how risks but flights are shorter. Also, pick one destination instead of a multi-day cruise that visits several islands.

Safe Hostel Travel: 14 Tips for Teens

Hostel traveling is one of the best ways to explore the world as a young person. These communities that dot every major city on the globe are hot spots for like-minded voyagers looking to visit faraway cultures and people.

However, life on the road doesn’t come without dangers to personal safety. In this article, we’ll highlight a few simple steps to ensure a fun and secure stay at a hostel, particularly if you are a teen traveler.

Find the Right Location

Finding the right location is one of the greatest ways to ensure safety while visiting a new city. Visiting a new destination (often abroad) is fun, but the cost of travel gets substantially high the further away you travel from your home.

Staying in Hostels is one effective way to budget your expenses but hostels are all about who will share the place with you, how far it is from the city center, public transportation, and what’s the cost when compared against Airbnb or Hotels.

Therefore, booking a hostel should be done carefully so that one doesn’t end up staying far from the places they want to explore. If you plan to drink, look for locations close to the nightlife of your city. It’s better to have a short journey back to bed in the nighttime.

Do Advance Research

There are several websites specifically dedicated to this form of travel, and each site posts helpful information such as they type of hostel, the type of community found there, and what to expect from a stay.

Make sure to find one that fits your personality, as this will mitigate culture shock and oftentimes depression.

Also, do some research about:

  • common travel scams in particular destinations you are planning to visit
  • the nearest embassy of your country
  • note down phone numbers for hospitals, ambulance, and police
  • shady neighborhoods to skip

Drink Responsibly

First thing first, find out the legal drinking age in the country you are visiting. And, do not drink in if you are not of age. Drinking is just one tiny way to have good times but traveling offers so much more. Be mindful, present and curious. Let your senses be overwhelmed by the new experiences (so you don’t feel like you are missing on anything).

Another tip is to drink responsibly (if you must) and if you are traveling in a group, then go to a bar with your group. Do not accept drinks from strangers no matter how friendly they appear.

Pack Light & Carefully

Take care when packing for your trip. Remember that most hostels sleep six to ten people in a single room, so the space you live in will be shared with strangers.

Therefore, all your personal items will be in a common space that is potentially open to thievery. Remember, the quickest way for a trip to be ruined is to lose something important.

One great strategy to minimize the threat of robbery is to be a packing minimalist. When gathering the items, carefully revise and prune the list of items that you will bring.

Expensive clothing shouldn’t be brought if it isn’t necessary, along with high-priced electronics that won’t be of use on the trip. Bringing fewer items will decrease your chances of getting something stolen abroad.

Bring a Lock

Inevitably, some valuables will have to be brought on your trip. Passports, money, and cell phones are part of every travelers’ arsenal when living in hostels. In order to keep these items protected, it is imperative that a lock and key is brought on your journey.

Almost every location will offer lockers to store your gear either for free or for a small fee. Using a locker will allow for important documents and information to be kept in a safe place while exploring the city’s sights or bars. Don’t hesitate to bring one!

Private Rooms

In addition to standard mixed-gender dorms, some locations will offer private rooms for booking. Private rooms are great options for additional privacy if you do not want to share living space with strangers.

Additionally, they can add another level of protection to personal items while visiting cities across the globe.

Specialty Hostels

Another option for female globetrotters is all-female dorms and hostels. While these hostels and rooms come fewer and further between, they can provide additional safety and security for women traveling abroad.

Be sure to look for these options if one has concerns about privacy or living with men.

Final Thoughts

Some additional precautionary tips to keep in mind are:

  • Ask the hostel staff for security advice or anything you should know about
  • Don’t open the hostel door for strangers
  • Make a copy of your Passport and email it to yourself
  • Hide some backup money somewhere safe. This is just in case you lose your wallet/purse
  • Plan to check-in at your hostel before dark for the first time
  • Don’t leave your hostel alone late at night (no matter how safe you feel)
  • Trust your gut “feeling” but also use your brain (it is better to be safe than sorry)

I hope these easy to follow steps help when planning your next trip! The world is a gift, and everyone should have the opportunity to see every part fearlessly.

Go forth and experience something new!

You might snort and say that “English is Global, Why translate it?”. But just a bit of illness abroad and you will know how important the local language is.

Countries such as China, Japan, South Korea are very serious about their mother tongue. If you give them your health documents in English, they can’t understand it because they don’t know it.

In such cases, download the health app if you haven’t already. And then input the information into it. You can use a translation app to translate all the information, So the translation would not be a biggie.

Prepare all these documents before you head out for your trip, And keep apps like to translate Microsoft Translator, Translator and Google Translator in your phone. They come in handy while traveling.

Sign up with the State Department

The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program provides US Nationals with many benefits. But above all in any case of emergency, the US Embassies can help you out in a much faster and swifter way.

It is a free service, so all the US citizens but takes advantage of it. The department also sends travel alerts regarding the country you are about to travel to.

Choose to Stay on Lower Floors

By lower floors, we do not mean the ground floor. You know in case of a break in the ground floor is the most vulnerable floor. But in the event of a fire emergency, the top floor is also going to give you trouble.

The comfy of all floors are the second and the third floor. In the case of break-ins, you are relatively safer, and in the event of a fire emergency, the ladder can reach you.

These are just a few practical tips for those travelers who love their safety. And yes it is also for those paranoid travelers who keep checking their door locks.

Preparing for Everything When You Travel With Pet

Whether you are going on a trip for the weekend or decide to move to the other country taking a pet with you – these are the tips for traveling with pets that will help make any trip more comfortable.

When planning your vacation, do not forget to take care of your pets. And if you could not leave the animal at home with someone, or want to take it with you, you should investigate all the details of transporting animals in advance.

Traveling with your best friend / The Art of Travel Partners

How to Travel with Pet

To avoid some unpleasant minutes while traveling with your pet, you need to prepare for this journey and here are some useful tips for traveling with pets.

1. Consider whether your Pet is able to Travel

The first and most important thing you need to think about before you go is whether your pet’s condition allows you to travel: if the pet is very young or, on the contrary, elderly, or it has serious health problems, it is better to leave it at home.

For some breeds with flat faces (such as Persian cats, bulldogs or pugs), air travel can be even deadly: they suffer oxygen deficiency and high temperatures more heavily.

If you are in doubt whether you can take the animal with you on a trip, consult your veterinarian – especially if you are traveling for the first time and proceed reading our tips for traveling with pets.

You should also take into account that such trips are never spontaneous: you have to collect documents and prepare your pet in advance.

The transportation of exotic animals is still more difficult:  to take a turtle, snake, monkey or some other unusual animal out of the country, you need to obtain a special permit in accordance with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

The Art of Travel Partners

2. Learn the Rules of Transporting Animals

If you are traveling abroad, find out the rules for bringing animals into the country to avoid unpleasant surprises.

It is forbidden to take animals to some of them – for example, you cannot bring chickens, pigeons, and parrots to Saudi Arabia, and you cannot bring animals under three months old to France.

In some places going on a short trip with pets is completely pointless – animals imported into the country are placed in quarantine.

For examples:

  • In the UK, if the conditions are not met, the pet may spend up to 4 months in quarantine.
  • To bring the animal in Hungary, it must also be vaccinated against the plague. And you cannot bring dogs and cats to Malta in general.
  • In France, Israel and Egypt there are restrictions on the import of three-month puppies and kittens. Some breeds of fighting dogs are not allowed to be taken to Australia and Malaysia.
  • It is strictly forbidden to come to Uruguay with birds. Rodents and monkeys cannot be brought to Japan.

If you are traveling with pets on airlines, learn the rules of a particular airline; rules for the transport of animals most often can be found on the website, e.g. apply to the pet travel agency to find out everything about American airline pet travel rules.

Transportation of the animal is paid separately at the airport. The amount depends on the weight of the pet along with the carrier – only guide dogs go free.

Animals weighing up to 5–8 kilograms (depending on the rules of a particular airline) can be carried with you in the cabin in the carrier; animals weighing from 8 to 50 kilograms (some airlines do not take pets weighing more than 32 kilograms) are transported in a heated luggage compartment.

It is better to make a request for an animal to be transported right away when buying a ticket or shortly thereafter: airlines have restrictions and, for example, if a plane already approved a place for a small dog, another passenger will not be allowed to take a cat to the salon.

Although most animals stay quietly in the baggage compartment; accidents and injuries of animals are not uncommon in this case, so before buying a ticket it is worthwhile to find out how animals are transported on specific airlines.

In addition, there are several measures that will help facilitate the animal trip in the luggage compartment. It is not necessary to travel with a pet during the holidays and the high tourist season.

This time, due to the influx of tourists, animals in carriers are likely to be treated less carefully. When traveling in summer, it is worth choosing morning or evening flights, and in winter – day flights.

It will be easier to avoid extreme temperatures in that way. In addition, you should not choose flights with a transfer, as the risk of losing an animal, in this case, is higher.

Live together, travel together

Traveling by train is simpler

The animal can move in the same compartment with the owner if other passengers do not mind. Otherwise, the owner will need to buy the entire compartment and purchase a special ticket for the animal.

Small pets can be transported in pet travel crate as carry-on luggage. If you are traveling with a dog on an electric train, put a muzzle and a leash on a furry friend.

In addition, before the trip you should also familiarize with the rules of the railway carrier – some of them may enter their own.

It is important to try to make the animal feel as comfortable as possible in the car. For dogs, you need to have a leash and a muzzle, because at stops you will need to escort the pet to the toilet. For cats, a special basket or carrier is required.

For birds, a small cage is enough. To make the animal comfortable on the road, you need to prepare a soft litter in advance.

It is best to feed the animal several hours before the trip. On the road, it is recommended to take only dry food and water. It is necessary to understand that in a long way the animal can rock, it may feel nauseous or there is a frequent urge to go to the toilet.

For this, be sure to have absorbent napkins or towels in advance. For the feathered friend, hygienic sand should be poured at the bottom of the cage, and you need to cover the cage with a dark cloth.

The advantage of traveling with an animal in a car is that you can gradually accustom your pet to such trips long before the travel.

The easiest way to travel by car is with a dog, as they usually like it. Have you seen a bunch of photos on the network with happy dog muzzles sticking out of the car?

4. Traveling with a Dog

Often you want to take the most loyal and faithful friend with you, plus, since it is more difficult to care for a dog than a cat.

Sometimes there is simply no choice because the animal has no one to stay with. What things are required?

Do not forget the leash, muzzle and pet travel bowls for food and water + food and water. It is also worth considering where and how you will walk with your dog in advance, especially if you, for example, take a long train ride.

5. Traveling with a Cat

The Art of Travel Partners

Traveling with a cat is easier than a dog because it’s not necessary to walk with a cat on the street and they are small.

It is usually enough to take a carrier in which your cat will sit quietly. It is more difficult to solve the problem with the toilet because even if you take the cat tray with you, it’s not a fact that the pet will deal with it in an unfamiliar place and in a stressful environment, which any road is for them.

Also, do not forget food, water, and other pet travel accessories. Plus, if the animal leads itself restlessly, howls or refuses to sit in the carrier, you can take it in your hands for a while and calm it down.

6. Traveling with Birds, Rats & Other Small Animals

The Art of Travel Partners

Birds, rats and other small animals can be easily and simply transported in a cage, where they can be fed, so there are usually no problems with traveling with them.

Another question is why should you take your rat, bird or guinea pig on a trip with you if you can leave it at home with friends or relatives unless you decide to buy somewhere, for example, a parrot, and bring it home – in this case, we do not forget to buy a sufficiently spacious cage in which it will be convenient for the animal.

7. Necessary Set of Pet Travel Documents

Did you take your medicine?

Currently, all adult animals should have an international veterinary certificate. It must be filled in the language of the country where your pet arrives. English is allowed.

The international passport must indicate the vaccines against rabies and the administration of the anthelmintic drug.

It is important to know that after a rabies drug is administered, a pet must be quarantined. And after taking the anthelmintic drug, you should wait for 1-5 days before transporting the animal anywhere. Therefore, it is necessary to take care of vaccinations in advance.

Also, the animal needs to implant a microchip, which can be done in a veterinary clinic.

8. Take the Animal First Aid Kit

On the trip, the animal must have the first aid kit. At the same time, one should be guided by the age and state of health of the pet: if it has chronic diseases, then in addition to a standard pet travel medication set, it is worth taking the medicines recommended by the veterinarian.

As in the case of people, you should not try to cure a pet by yourself – when planning a trip, you should know in advance the addresses of the veterinary clinics where the animal can be helped.

It is also worth taking care of food: if the food you used to give to an animal is not for sale in the other country, you should take it with you with a small margin.

9. Think of Animal Comfort

The Art of Travel Partners

When planning a trip, think about the comfort of an animal: taking it with you only makes sense if you can give it enough attention.

It should be borne in mind that not every place is allowed to be visited with pets – think about where your faithful friend will be waiting for you while you are busy with your business, and whether you can leave it alone in an unfamiliar room.

In some countries, you are not allowed to go to the beach – except for specialized places. Consider the breed; for example, fluffy pets will be too hot in warm countries.

When booking a hotel room, find out if you can stay with animals in it. It is better to clarify the requirements and pet travel services: often in hotels where it is allowed to take pets with you, they still will not allow animals larger than five kilograms.

Find out what special conditions the hotel has – for example, whether a paddock is provided. If you are going to the other country with a dog, specify the rules of pet walking – “Is it necessary to put a muzzle on the animal?” “Is it possible to let it off the leash”, and so on.

Before you begin your journey anywhere, you must always work out in advance all the nuances that may arise during the trip. Then travel with your darling will bring you pleasant, unforgettable impressions.

6 Outdoor Activities that can Improve Memory and Focus

Going outside works wonders for our body, we are all aware of that. But let’s talk about what it does for our mind. I’m sure we are all aware of how everyone is talking about the outside world these days and the magic it works for our growth and development – both physical and mental.

There are, of course, a large number of ways how your brain improves when you are more open to fresh air and a natural environment, but we will be discussing memory and focus, mainly.

Improve Memory and Focus

We all know indoor games, activities, and exercises that help in improving our memory and concentration, but you should be aware that these two traits can easily be enhanced if you become more perceptive to life in the outside world as well.

Let us talk about the activities which will help you out and how they can do so:

1. Walking in Nature

So, let us begin with the basics. Can a simple walk in a park or around your block help you out? Of course, it can. Walking in a natural environment can be considered a form of meditation. You find it easy to block out the world around you and focus solely on your thoughts.

You can clear out any unnecessary concerns from your mind and start organizing things that truly matter in your brain. One of the reasons why we struggle with memory issues is that we lose some critical ones in the plethora of unwanted thoughts that we have accumulated.

Once you can empty your mind of thoughts that do not matter, you will realize that there are some critical things that you need to work on. Losing junk thoughts will also help you improve your focus on the things that matter.

You can make walks a daily or weekly thing then and use that time to contemplate the world around you. The natural beauty around you will also calm your anxiety and stress which will further enable you to think clearly.

2. Team Sports

Many of us assume that playing team sports for fun or in leagues is for knuckleheads alone. This concept is far from the truth because team sports require a lot more focus than individual sports.

Not only do you have to be wary of your movement and actions during the game, but you also need to be aware of what your team is doing as well. Working in complete coordination with your group requires a lot of focus which exercises your mind and body both.

The chances are that you are not only going to be playing the sport once but many times. So you must always remember the movements and the coordination you have learned.

It eventually becomes reflexive when you play with the same team for a long time but not before giving your brain the workout it needs!

3. Outdoor Memory Games

When we think of memory games, we usually think about sitting in a friend’s living room with a memory board game or a card game or something of that sort.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if we could play memory games outside so that we benefit from nature while working on our focus and memory?

One game we have in mind is collecting a couple of things from your surroundings, like twigs and stones and flowers. Then, show them to the participants and blindfold them.

Remove an item or two, open their blindfold, and ask them to guess what the missing thing is. You can play this game at various difficulty levels.

4. Gardening

Gardening is very beneficial for therapeutic reasons, and many people practice it to remain calm and composed. However, without truly focusing on your garden’s needs, all your hard work will go down the drain.

You plant seeds, and to nurture them into a healthy plant, you must remember to take care of them every day. Some plants also have specific needs which you must keep in mind as well.

Also, you need to focus on how everything is growing so that if there are any anomalies, you notice right away.Gardening is not an easy job, and it can be an excellent exercise for the mind and body.

5. Yoga

Yoga can be an indoor or an outdoors venture, but you must have noticed flourishing Yogis take their practice to the outside world.

They practice their skill outside because it makes them more confident in their art. Other than that, practicing Yoga outside also improves its meditative benefits.

Many Yogis also believe that they can absorb the chakra from nearby life forms such as plants and trees when they are practicing Yoga, and that is why they choose to do it outside.

6. Road Trips

We lose our concentration and memory the more stressed out we are. So to relieve that stress, why not go out on a fantastic road trip?

It could be a wonderful vacation where you could be surrounded by nature all the time. You can find some time to get rid of additional concerns and go with the flow.

When you get back home, you will notice that you remember things better than before and you concentrate on things better than before as well.

Top 5 Tips on How to Plan a Babymoon

Babymoons are that special trip that parents-to-be take before their bundle of joy arrives. A last chance to relax and restore before life gets exceptionally busy.

If you are planning for a babymoon, it’s an opportunity for you to enjoy time together as couples without the responsibilities of parenthood.

Babymoon Tips

There are several considerations to make when you plan your babymoon. Traveling while pregnant can create some challenges, but it’s usually very doable if you plan ahead of time. Here are five tips on planning a perfect babymoon.

1. Plan for traveling in your second trimester

Many moms-to-be find the first semester filled with nausea and overwhelming fatigue. Once you hit your second trimester, the morning sickness is usually gone, and you’re not so big that you’re uncomfortable.

This is why obstetricians typically recommend that you go between weeks 14 to 28. You’re not uncomfortable, your fatigue has lifted somewhat, and your mind is finally able to entertain the idea of going somewhere and enjoying yourself. The second trimester is the ideal time for travel during your pregnancy.

2. Plan the destination

Now that you know when you want to go, it’s time to pick where you want to go. Do you want exotic or laid-back? Casual or formal and pampered? Consider the climate of the place you’re heading and make sure that any amenities you need are easy to access.

Your babymoon should not necessarily be the time to travel somewhere to do a lot of sight-seeing or a highly-physical adventure. Cruises are not the best option either in case morning sickness is still an issue. Instead, you want this to be a time that you can do a lot of relaxing and resting.

3. Don’t do long flights or long roadtrips

Though you may be dreaming of a European trek as your final hurrah before the baby comes, consider all that such a trip entails. Aside from the comfort factor, sitting for extended periods of time can pose health hazards for even the healthiest of people.

Going abroad can cause jet lag, making an already fatigued mom-to-be even more exhausted. Try to keep your travel time to less than four hours.

Trying to run through an airport to catch a connecting flight is the last thing you want to be doing during your second trimester. If you choose a destination that requires flying, don’t forget to get an aisle seat, since you are going to need frequent bathroom breaks.

4. Score discounts by sharing what you’re doing

Many resorts and hotels offer discounts to travelers that are celebrating a special occasion. Let the person know that you’re booking with that you are on your babymoon and see what special offers they can provide. Sometimes you can get a room upgrade or a special room service package.

5. Keep medical support a priority

In addition to ensuring that your doctor has given you the green light to travel, you also want to make sure the area you’re traveling to has good medical care nearby.

Usually, the second trimester is pretty uneventful, but you don’t want to find yourself in an emergency situation with no medical help nearby. Keep your doctor’s contact info on a card with you at all times, as well as your insurance details.

If you keep these important guidelines in mind, you will find that you can plan a babymoon that will be filled with happy memories to hold on to after the baby arrives.

Travel Skin Care Tips

Well, you are in luck, as we are going to tell you about five surprising ways, which can help you to maintain the natural glow and radiance of your skin when you are traveling.

Make a checklist

If you are very much conscious about your looks or you are a beauty freak, you must have a proper skincare routine. There must be a complete set of different products on your table. You use all of these items on a daily basis because you really want to look gorgeous and stand out in parties.

Breaking any routine can be very destructive to the human body. It responds to all changes. Same goes for beauty care routine.

If you are traveling, your skin is not getting all creams, lotions, moisturizers, remedies that it is used to. This disturbance of routine can be disastrous for it.

So try to pack all of these items when you are traveling. Make a checklist, so that you do not forget anything.

Blotting papers

Please read this one very carefully. Blotting papers are one of the most critical items you should have. (Please do not forget them).

Continually rubbing your skin with tissue papers can damage it significantly. It can destroy the skin. Besides, if you are going to the area with hot temperatures, there are high chances that you will experience oily skin.

So you must have the bloating paper in your hand all the time if you do not want dirt and oil to get accumulated to your skin. Use it and remove the un-necessary oil from your face. These papers do not cause any redness on the skin. They do not leave any residue. These factors make them the decidedly better choice as compared to tissue papers.

Stay Hydrated

This tip is essential when you are indoors, but it becomes indispensable when you are outdoors. Without water, your skin would be ruined. Make sure to stay hydrated all the time. Avoid soft drinks as much as possible. Proper water intake would keep your skin elastic. It will maintain the natural glow of the skin.

Use Effective Cleanser

If your skin is extra sensitive, it will lose its natural glow very quickly during the trip. Skin attracts a lot of dust and dirt when you are traveling. This accumulated dirt can cause severe breakouts. So never, forget to keep your cleanser.

Keep on using it every time you need, and your skin will stay fresh. It will protect your skin from damages and breakouts. It washes out all the dirt and keeps your skin clean.

Besides, you also need to make sure that you are using the same cleanser you use at home. The new brand would be a change when you are already under thousands of variations. Don’t change your skin care products. Even a slight turn can lead to abrupt damages.

Ice Your Eyes

It is the convenient way to refresh your eyes and make them less prone to infections. The new atmosphere can have thousands of deadly germs, which can cause problems to your eyesight. So ice them now and then.

Keep a single ice pack on every eye for a while. It will relieve your stress and exertion and decrease the probability of getting dark circles under eyes.

Sunscreen and moisturizers are two must ingredients of your beauty pack when you are on the trip. Applying the moisturizer will save your skin from adverse weather and keep it moisturized and hydrated. Not using sunscreen can cause severe sunburns.

Also, make it sure that you use comfortable clothes. The tight dress can cause irritation, itches, and rashes.

Beach Safety Tips: Ocean, Rip Current, Sharks & Swimming

Everyone loves the beach and water activities. Be it swimming, playing at the beach, snorkeling, or just relaxing in the sun at a sandy beach. However, ocean and beach can be a dangerous place if you are not paying attention.

In today’s blog, we are going to cover the Beach Safety, Ocean Safety, and Swimming Safety tips to make sure you’ll be equipped to take care of your and your family’s safety on your next vacation.

Water Safety

Whether you are at a beach or pool, swimming is a fun sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Swimming is also the most popular summer activity. That’s why it is important to know how to be safe while you’re in the water.

First thing first, if you do not know swimming, enroll yourself in swimming lessons. Also, if you have kids, you should consider enrolling them in age-appropriate swimming classes. Swimming can be a life-saving skill.

Beach Safety

  • When at the beach, please swim in designated swimming areas supervised by lifeguards.
  • Always swim with a buddy; do not allow anyone to swim alone.
  • If you know swimming and floating, you should try to conserve your energy by floating on your back and staying calm if you are in trouble. This will ensure you have the energy to remain afloat until assistance arrives.
  • Carry appropriate equipment, such as reaching or throwing equipment, a cell phone, life jackets and a first aid kit.
  • Know how and when to call “9-1-1” (in the US) or the local emergency number.
  • Enroll in a First Aid and CPR courses to learn how to respond to emergencies.
  • Protect your skin. Limit the amount of direct sunlight you receive between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and wear sunscreen with a protection factor of at least SPF 30.
  • Drink plenty of water regularly, even if you’re not thirsty. Avoid or minimize drinks with alcohol or caffeine in them.
  • Do not hyperventilate before swimming underwater or have breath-holding contests (unless there is professional and medical supervision present).
  • Even if you do not plan on swimming, be cautious around natural bodies of water including ocean shoreline, rivers, and lakes. Colder temperatures, flash floods, underwater currents, and other unforeseen hazards can make a fall into these bodies of water dangerous.
  • If you and your family go out boating, make sure everyone wears approved life jackets. Most boating fatalities occur from drowning.
  • Always remove the cover completely from a pool before swimming. Partially covered pools are dangerous.
  • If you’re caught in a current in a lagoon, ocean, or river, don’t try to swim against the current; swim across the current to gradually get out of it.
  • Be extra watchful at dawn or dusk, as shark attacks are more likely to happen during these times.
  • Avoid alcohol use. Alcohol and swimming is a dangerous combination. Alcohol impairs judgment, balance, and coordination which affects swimming skills; and reduces the body’s ability to stay warm.

Beach Safety for Kids

  • Never let your child swim alone, even if she’s wearing armbands or a flotation tube.
  • When swimming in the ocean, hold your child’s hand at all times and make sure your feet and hers can touch the ocean floor at all times.
  • Although much fun can be had, don’t let your child drift in the ocean on an inflatable vessel or board, as the current can quickly drag a child out into the sea.
  • Put children in bright swimming suits and rash shirts which are easy to spot in the water.
  • Identify an easy to find point on the beach, such as the lifeguard tower, where the child can go to if you are separated. Teach the child to not panic and go to the lifeguard tower in case of separation.

Pool Safety for Kids

If you have kids, install and use barriers around your home pool or hot tub. Safety covers and pool alarms should be added as additional layers of protection.

  • Ensure that the pool is secured with appropriate barriers. Pool barrier should be at least 4-feet high with gates that are self-closing, self-latching, open outward or away from the pool. The latch should be high enough to be out of a small child’s reach.
  • Never leave a young child unattended near water and do not trust a child’s life to another child. Always keep an eye on them. Remember, it takes only two minutes for a child to drown. (For adults, it is 3-5 minutes which is not a lot of time).
  • If you have an above-ground or inflatable pool, remove access ladders and secure the safety cover whenever the pool is not in use.
  • Remove any structures that provide access to the pool, such as outdoor furniture, climbable trees, decorative walls and playground equipment.
  • Spa baths and Jacuzzis aren’t safe for children because little children can’t support themselves in the swirling water. Keep these covered and locked.
  • Teach your child never to dive into the unknown water. Train them to always jump in feet first until it becomes a habit. If it’s an unfamiliar pool, it could be too shallow to dive into, which can result in serious injuries.
  • Teach children to always ask permission to go near the water. Maintain constant supervision. Avoid distractions when supervising children around water.
  • Keep toys that are not in use away from the pool and out of sight. Toys can attract young children to the pool.
  • If a child is missing, check the water first. Every second count in preventing drowning, death or disability.
  • Have young children and novice swimmers wear life jackets around water, but do not rely on life jackets alone. Life jackets are not a guarantee for saving your life.

Ocean Safety Tips

Swimming in the ocean takes different skills, so before you get your feet wet, it’s best to learn how to swim in the surf. You should also swim only at a lifeguard-protected beach, within the designated swimming area. Obey all instructions and orders from lifeguards.

  • While you’re enjoying the water, keep alert and check the local weather conditions. Make sure you swim sober and that you never swim alone. And even if you’re confident in your swimming skills, make sure you have enough energy to swim back to shore.
  • Have young children or non-swimmers wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets in water. No one should use any other type of floatation device unless they are able to swim.
  • Don’t dive headfirst as it risks injury to your neck. Check for depth and obstructions before diving, and go in feet first the first time.
  • Pay close attention to the waves. Even in shallow water, wave action can cause a loss of footing and balance.
  • Keep a lookout for aquatic life. Water plants and animals may be dangerous. Avoid patches of plants. Leave the marine life alone.
  • Don’t swim or surf in an ocean alone. Make use of buddy system. Tell others if you are going for surfing to call and check on you later that evening.

Rip Currents

Beachgoers should be aware of how dangerous rip currents are and how they can be hard to spot sometimes. Most of the beach rescues and a lot of drowning incidents are due to rip currents. A “Rip” is a strong current beginning around the shore that runs away from the beach.

Being caught in one may feel like you are in a flowing river. Not all rip currents flow directly out to sea. Some may run parallel to the beach before ultimately heading out to sea. Swim only at beaches with lifeguards present and in the designated swimming area.

Rip currents can form in any large open water area, such as low spots and breaks in sandbars, or near structures such as jetties and piers.

How to spot rip current?

Although not always detectable, strong rip currents have the following signs:

  • Water through a surf zone that is a different color than the surrounding water.
  • A break in the incoming pattern of waves. It means there is an underwater rip going on.
  • Seaweed or debris moving out through the surf zone.
  • Isolated turbulent and choppy water in the surf zone.

Rip Current Safety Tips

If you find yourself in a rip current, be aware of the danger of rip currents and remember the following for your safety:

  • If you are caught in a rip, try to stay calm and don’t fight the current. This is important.
  • If you feel confident, Swim Parallel to the Beach – often this is towards the breaking waves which can then assist you back to shore. Once you are free of the rip, turn immediately, and start swimming towards the shore. Repeat this process until you are safely back to the shoreline.
  • If you can’t swim to the shore, float or tread water until you are free of the rip current and then try to head toward the shore.
  • Try to draw attention to yourself by waving and calling for help while floating to conserve energy.
  • Stay at least 100 feet away from piers and jetties. Permanent rip currents often exist near these structures.
  • If someone is in trouble in the water, get help from a lifeguard. If a lifeguard is not available, have someone call 9-1-1. Throw the victim something that floats – a lifejacket, cooler, inflatable tubes, boards, and yell instructions and show hand signs on how to escape the rip current.
  • When at the beach, check conditions before entering the water. Check to see if any warning flags are up or ask a lifeguard about water conditions, beach conditions, or any potential hazards.

Large Waves & Surf

While waves are one of the most enjoyable features of the beach and ocean, they are affected by different conditions.

Plunging (dumping) waves break suddenly and can knock you over and throw you to the bottom with great force. These waves usually occur at low tide where sandbanks are shallow. They can cause injuries to swimmers, particularly spinal and head injuries, so you should never try and bodysurf on one of these waves. If in doubt ask a lifesaver or lifeguard for safety advice.

Spilling waves have white water tumbling down the face of the wave. They usually have less force and are the safest for body surfing. They are found in sheltered bays where the sea floor slopes gradually, and near sandbanks at high tide.

Surging waves may never actually break as they approach the water’s edge because the water below them is very deep. These waves occur in rocky areas around cliff faces and where the beach drops off quickly. They can be very dangerous because they can knock swimmers over and drag them back into deep water.

Large surf should only be attempted by experienced swimmers. Swimmers should also avoid creek and river mouths when a large surf is running because the currents in these areas are often stronger.

Sharks

On average, shark-related deaths are one hundred times less likely to happen than a person drowning over the same period of time. If you are paying attention and usually don’t seek out marine life, chances are you’ll never encounter one.

Also, it is worth noting that there are over 360 species of sharks in the ocean, but only a few are perceived to be dangerous.

Shark Safety Tips

  • Do not swim, surf or surf-ski when birds, dolphins or seals are feeding nearby.
  • Do not swim in deep water beyond the breakers.
  • Do not swim if you are bleeding.
  • Do not swim near river mouths.
  • Do not swim, surf or surf-ski near areas where trek-netting, fishing or spearfishing is taking place.
  • If a shark has recently been sighted in an area where no shark spotters are present, consider using another beach for the day.
  • First-time visitors to beach areas should ask the local law enforcement officials, lifeguards or locals about the area.
  • Obey beach officials at all times.
  • For kayaking or surf-skiing far out to sea, consider paddling in groups and staying close together (in a diamond formation).
  • Pay attention to any shark signage on beaches.

Stingers

Non-tropical marine stingers, such as the Bluebottle (Physalia) or Hair Jelly (Cyanea), may be found anywhere. Their stingers are not generally life-threatening but can cause distress and discomfort if you come into contact with them.

Tropical marine stingers, such as the Irukandji and Box Jellyfish, are classed as “dangerous”. Caution must be exercised when entering tropical waters during the ‘marine stinger season’, which generally runs from November to March.

If you get stung, the treatment will vary depending on your location and what type of stinger is involved.

Treating Jellyfish Sting

Try not to build sandcastles and play ball games where there are jellyfish around. But if you get stung, follow the treatment and tips, as follows:

  • Remove the patient from the water and restrain if necessary.
  • Do not allow rubbing of the sting area.
  • In areas where dangerous tropical jellyfish are found, and the species causing the sting cannot be clearly identified, it is safer to treat the patient with vinegar. Vinegar has shown to ‘disarm’ the jellyfish’s stinging cells. This helps prevent more toxins from entering the body.
  • Liberally douse the stung area with vinegar to neutralize invisible stinging cells and Wash with Seawater to remove any invisible stinging cells. Do NOT wash with fresh water, use Seawater.
  • If vinegar is unavailable, pick off any remnants of the tentacles with fingers (preferably with gloves). You may feel a harmless prickling on your finger, it’s okay.
  • Remove all stingers by gently scraping them off with the blunt side of a knife or credit card. Don’t try to scrape them off with your bare hands or nails.
  • The best treatment is hot water – as hot as you can take without burning. Then apply an ice-cold compress or ice pack.
  • Apply cold packs or wrapped ice for pain.
  • Apply a topical anesthetic cream like Stingose or Anthisan.
  • Call for help, dial 9-1-1 or the local emergency number and get a surf lifesaver or lifeguard to help you.
  • Assess the patient and commence CPR as necessary.
  • If the victim’s condition is worsening, seek medical assistance and transport to the hospital immediately.

Bluebottle Sting

If there are bluebottles around, avoid swimming in the sea. Tell your kids not to ‘pop’ the bluebottles lying on the beach. And don’t pick them up.

If someone is bitten, then follow this procedure:

  • Keep the patient at rest and under constant observation.
  • Do not allow rubbing of the sting area.
  • Pick off any remaining tentacles with fingers (a harmless prickling may be felt).
  • Rinse the sting area well with seawater to remove any invisible stinging cells.
  • Place the patient’s sting area in hot water (no hotter than the rescuer can comfortably tolerate).
  • If the pain is unrelieved by the heat, or if hot water is not available, apply cold packs or wrapped ice.
  • Rinse the area with seawater as soon as possible (don’t use freshwater). Make sure you remove all the invisible stinging cells.
  • When removing tentacles, gently rub sea sand on the tentacles that are attached to the affected area – this will help to remove them. Also, try to remove tentacles by hand. If possible, wear protective gloves.
  • Immerse the affected area in hot salt water for 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Apply a topical anesthetic cream like Stingose or Anthisan.

Consult a doctor immediately if there’s persistent pain, itchiness, blistering and any symptoms of fever. Call for immediate help if there are any signs of breathing difficulty.

Treating Cuts

If you or your child gets a cut or would from broken glass or other sharp objects lying around on the beach, it’s important to stop the bleeding, avoid infection and prevent shock.

  • Apply pressure (without pushing the object in deeper) to stop the bleeding.
  • Don’t try to remove an object that’s embedded deeper in the skin yourself. Seek out the nearest doctor or hospital to attend the wound.

Preventing Spinal Injuries

Any neck soreness or pain should be treated as a potential spinal injury. Most spinal injuries occur around the beach by accident. No one plans for them. Being careful and using common sense is the best way to avoid them.

Serious spinal or neck injuries can happen by:

  • Being dumped headfirst by a wave
  • Diving headfirst into the water
  • Jumping off rocks (also called cliff diving)
  • Hitting submerged objects other than the seafloor

Beach First Aid Kit

A good travel preparation practice is to always find out where the nearest hospital or ambulance service is to your holiday destination. Also, carrying a travel first aid kit can come really handy when in sudden need.

9 Tips to Prepare for a Long Motorcycle Roadtrip

Planning and preparing for a long motorcycle road trip isn’t just a day job, as there are no laws regarding the preparation, except a few guides, which will make the long trip easier.

For some people, preparing for a long road trip with a motorcycle is about the essentials you take with you and the nonessentials you leave behind.

The fact that more and more people are starting to ride bikes and go on either short or long road trips, either alone, or with a group of friends, is quite exciting. However, most bikers, while well accustomed with the city riding, often know little or nothing about comfortable and safe riding on a long journey.

On the other hand, the beauty about motorcycle riders is that, when they see a like-minded fellow, they always try to learn as much as possible from that person. Well, if this is your first time on a road trip, here are a few tips from those with experience:

Repair & Prepare Your Motorcycle

Before embarking on any journey, you have to make sure your motorcycle is fully equipped and prepared, so you can have a problem-free motorcycle road trip. A full tune-up of the bike is essential, prior to the trip. You can take it to the mechanic, or make the necessary adjustments yourself, just follow the tips below:

  • Make sure you check and change both the filter and the oil
  • Make sure all the necessary fluids are in their right levels
  • See if both fuel and air filters are okay
  • Make all the necessary adjustments to brake and throttle cables
  • Check if the tread and the tire pressure are still intact
  • Make sure all the lights, gauges, and the horn are working properly.

You can always go to the user’s manual for more information, as regards the motorcycle’s maintenance. However, if the whole bike preparation seems overwhelming to you, it is advisable you take it to a technician, prior to the trip.

Test Your Motorcycle & Keep Tool Kit Intact

After you adjust all the necessary assessments on your motorcycle, take it out for a spin, to test and check new repairs and features. Also, don’t forget to pack your toolkit, in case you need to make some repairs or adjustments during the trip.

Pack Lightly

Motorcycle luggage comes in different variations, from soft textile to metal, and is available in most bike online stores. Saddlebags, which can be placed and strapped in the back seat, as well as tank bags, which magnetically cling to the bike’s tank, also come in different styles and sizes.

When packing, try to take things, which can be easily disposed of. This way, you will easily shed off big weights. When you pack clothes, do not fold it, but roll it instead. It will occupy less space. Remember to bring a first aid kit with essential medicines too.

Map Out Your Route

If you are going on a motorcycle road trip, you should know the way or have a clear idea of the directions.

However, if you don’t, it is recommended to map out your route through a printed map or use a mobile phone screenshot map, not to waste much time on the way. If the road or the route is confusing, ask locals for directions.

Embrace Technology

For some people, going on a long ride with no gadgets to keep the company can be quite boring. Therefore, when planning an extended motorcycle road trip, think about technologies, which you need to take with you, to get yourself entertained on the way.

For example, a motorcycle Bluetooth headset, linked to the phone, will help you receive phone calls, provide you with a radio connection to other riders, and offer voice direction via GPS.

And a motorcycle battery charger will help you power up your smartphone on the route. However, be careful, not to get yourself carried away, especially when listening to music through a Bluetooth headset.

Eat Right & Stay Hydrated

Overeating at any point of a long motorcycle road trip is very wrong because the chances are very high, you might suffer from indigestion. Heavy meals use an enormous amount of energy for digestion and cause drowsiness too.

It is advisable to eat light food for breakfast, while you can have something heavier for lunch. Also, if you are used to eating a lot, pack some snacks with you. You should also keep in mind, that finding toilets on some roads can be quite difficult.

Most people don’t take the concept of hydration seriously. However, staying hydrated during the motorcycle road trip will help you reduce the problem of stress, caused predominantly by dehydration.

Get a bottle of water with a long tube, which can be safely packed in your bag. This way, you won’t have to make a stop or remove your helmet, if you get thirsty.

Every time you make a stop, drink some water, even if you don’t want to. A refillable pack with two liters of water with Glucose-D or an energy drink is usually enough for a twenty-four-hour ride.

Be Prepared for All Weather Conditions

Pack rainwear and some warm clothes, even if the weather promises to be okay. This way, you will be equipped for any discomfort, caused by the adverse weather during your motorcycle road trip.

You should also be ready to change your clothes at any point. When packing for a long motorcycle road trip, you can never be too thoughtful. Prepare for the heat, cold, and rain!

Take Time to Rest

Since it is not a competition, you can relax for a while, to prevent bum burner or saddle sore. But you should not take frequent breaks, only important ones, or else the flow experienced on the bike will go away.

It is also crucial to make random checks of all fluid levels and the level of your hydration, whenever you have a break. This way, you can easily plan the next stop, in case any adjustments or reparations are essential.

Remember to Enjoy the Moments

Most riders tend to forget about photographs. When packing, take your camera, or, if you don’t have or can’t afford one, your smartphone will do the magic. It will help you capture all the memorable moments of your trip.

Pictures, taken during the stops, can serve as documentation and also, be shared with friends and family on social media platforms.

Conclusion

If you follow these tips carefully, your first long motorcycle road trip will be less stressful, and the second will already be a piece of cake.

How To Deal With Periods While Traveling

Periods while traveling is not fun. In fact, it is the worst sort of torture when you are supposed to be having fun. Women (just as much as men do) roam the world solo or in groups. But travel is not same for all genders. Sometimes, an ugly problem can rear its head and spoil all the fun of a traveling woman.

PERIODS WHILE TRAVELING

If you are a girl, then you must know what I am talking about (the monthly thingies that come along and makes us all sail on a crimson boat.) With Aunt Flo it gets uncomfortable to travel, to go to a beach, to wear bikinis, and needless to say, you seldom have as much fun as you thought you would.

If you bleed just before your anticipatory trip, it becomes annoying. You think all your travel plans were for nothing, but do not give up your next trip in fear of Aunt Flo. There are many ways how women around the world tackle the problem; you can do so too. Here are a few tips to help you deal with periods when traveling.

Women who are hard-core travelers sometimes resort to controlling the period. It is one of the best methods if you have a trip planned ahead of months. There are several ways by which you can skip your period.

SKIPPING THE SUGAR PILLS

Image Link

The commonly used method is the Birth Control Pills. Women skip the week in which they need to use the sugar pills instead they move on to the next pill pack. It is a way of tricking the body into thinking it is pregnant.

Do use the advice of your doctor before using this method, and if you change your prescription then take time before your body adjusts to the medication. So, you do not face any problem dealing with periods when traveling.

USING THE ORTHO EVRA

Image Link

It does a similar function as that of the Birth Control Pill. But instead of taking it, you put the patch on your body. In this way, the hormones released into your body control your pregnancy. Women those who use this, change the patch every week and go patch-free during periods.

If you do not want to deal with periods when traveling, then trick your body. But if you want to trick your body into not having a period then put on the patch in the fourth week of your cycle.

PUTTING THE VAGINAL RING

Vaginal Ring gets inserted into your vagina. And the rings get changed every three weeks, the fourth week is that of the period. But instead of going vaginal ring-free, you put on the ring as soon as you change the previous ring. These are not so reliable as they fall out sometimes and also tend to cause problems during intercourse.

TAKE THE SHOT

Image Link

Pills are tiring; you have to remember to take them every day. So there is the Depo- Provera which is a popular and easy method of birth control used by women. One shot lasts three months, but if your trip is longer then remember to take the prescription with you. Though there is no guarantee for your period to stop.

Some women do not like to meddle with the natural cycle. And they deal with the periods, rather than shoo them away. While traveling, periods is the most annoying of all things that can happen. So, choose your non-period weeks to travel. And even though you are on the road for more than one month, then pay attention to these following.

SANITARY PADS OR TAMPONS

Image Link

Those who use sanitary pads or tampons, need to pack their share of pads. Pack according to each day and what else you might need. Make a separate package for each day containing- Pads or tampon you need per day, sanitizer, wipes, painkillers (Midol, whatever suits you) and extra packet to dispose of your pads. And yes, Pack extra undies as much as you can.

CUPS

Image Link

Vaginal cups are by far the most reliable thing women can use while traveling. You do not need to worry about changing it from time to time in a day. Just wash it while you take your shower daily. But do carry along some feminine wash, or soaps to wash the menstrual cups.

There are chances that the cup gets misplaced or leaks due to heavy bleeding, in that case, wear panty liners just to be sure.

WHAT TO PACK

Image Link

Clothes for your period week better be of dark colors, so that you avoid the dark patches on crisp light colored dresses of yours. If you plan to have beach day during your trip then, wear a swimsuit with bottoms. No string bikinis please, you better cover up. Waterproof bottom or shorts go well with your swimsuit and make you feel comfy.

If you do not want to go to the water, then avoid it. Just spend a day on the beach, sunbathing. There is nothing wrong with it.

WHAT TO EAT

Image Link

Stay Hydrated that is the first thing you must do. Next is the intake of iron, and magnesium. Your body loses blood; you need iron surplus while on periods. Magnesium reduces the pain or muscle cramps. So, eat veggies and salads. Avoid fried and salty food.

Keep these few things in mind, and you can travel the world without worrying about the bloody mess. You will not have a headache trying to cope up with periods when traveling.

Be Bold For Solo Travel: International Women’s Day

Be Bold For Change (#beboldforchange) was the motto of the 106th International Women’s Day 2017. Even after a century of celebrating this day of women empowerment, gender equality is a still a far-off thing in today’s society.

Instead of waiting for the change to happen on its own, let all the women change for themselves. Come out of your shells and comfort zones, and break the stereotype. There is no better way for a woman to realize her power than traveling solo.

This Women’s Day – be bold enough to travel on your own; go traveling solo! To all those adventurous ladies who have already traveled solo, kudos to you!

Be Bold For Solo Travel

There are a lot of hardships that come your way when you decide to travel alone; maybe it is the concerns of your loved ones or the fear of the unknown. As a woman, we have to deal with a lot of issues (and internal chatter) before embarking on a solo trip.

Here are the top 8 concerns woman face and how to overcome the resistance.

Concerns From Loved Ones

When you want to spread your wings, sometimes they get tied down by the concerns of your parents. Their concern (even though annoying) is explainable and mostly reasonable. With the increase in violence towards women in all spheres, it is only fair that parents get concerned for their daughters traveling alone.

But once you make the decision to travel solo, take your time and explain to your parents. They will surely understand, once you put your plans before them and promise to contact them regularly.

Male Oglers

There is no shutter to the eyes of a male, and even if there were one, they would still stare. When you travel to a new country, it is common for women to get male glances.

That is why before traveling to your destination, do extensive research. Read about the culture and traditions so you can dress in an appropriate way. It is okay to wear shorts and a tank top, wandering around the Parisian Lanes.

But in some places (for example in India or a Muslim country) it is not a good idea to attract unwanted attention to yourself. Even if you see some locals wearing modern western clothing, it is not a bad idea to keep a low profile.

Wherever you travel, always make sure to check first what the local custom and cultures regarding clothing are and pack accordingly. You don’t have to be boring. You can still travel in style as well as comfort without attracting unwanted male attention. Here is a hint: try ethnic clothes.

Get Over the Pitying

In many places around the world, people think traveling alone is pitiful. They label you as a “sad old soul” who needs a partner to settle down. But women who travel alone know well that the road can be the best partner, and new experiences keep you in good company.

It is not impossible to have a family and travel; you can do both if you have enough patience to balance both. Do not feel sorry for yourself or lonely, and when you feel so, think about why you traveled in the first place. It is easy to use just a patient smile and calm voice to let the people know that you don’t care what they think, but you care about what you want.

Periods When Traveling

Traveling is fun, but the change of weather can mess with your menstrual cycle. You cannot enjoy a beach day with cramps annoying you. And if you are enjoying an African Jungle Safari, then God save you! (Please pack some painkillers, just in case.)

Read: How to Travel like a Pro during Periods

In many countries, there are less than safe and unhygienic conditions. Sometimes you have only a bucket of cold water to deal with your problem. In those troublesome times too, we women do not give up. Though it is better that you plan your trips on dates when you are likely period-free, so you can have fun to the fullest.

Kickass In A New Territory

Solo women travelers are easy targets for desperate men. In countries where men have a chauvinistic mindset, they do not think before pouncing. If you are a beginner, it is better if you avoid dangerous countries like Yemen. In many of the developing countries too, you come across many instances where solo female travelers get abused. Research well, plan and prepare.

Do your research on your destination and rate it on a scale of safety. And if it is above 6/10 then it is okay to take the risk. Once at your destination, put your game face on (reserve a smile for the friendly ones).

A self-defense program comes in handy in case you need to kick ass when the situation arises. Carry weapons for safety with you, like pepper sprays and a penknife just to take your opponent by surprise. And above all look confident even though you are shaking in your boots!

Pack To Look Pretty

After reading this, you must surely want to explore the wild and badass side of your personality. But the biggest superpower of a female traveler is the ability to pack less and travel more. Girls, we know you love to look beautiful. But sometimes blending comfort and beauty is an excellent thing.

A couple of t-shirts, jeans or shorts, jackets, boots and a dress or two is more than enough for your travel wardrobe. Make sure all the combinations work together, so you do not repeat an outfit in your pictures.

Remember there is always that one lovely dress and accessories you buy on your trip to take back home. So, leave some room for them in your luggage as well. Also, do not forget your essential toiletries. You need not carry your makeup kit with you: a Gloss and Kajal will do the trick.

Get Wild and Have Fun

Are you bold enough for a transformative change? If yes, then make your decision and get wild. Traveling alone can get lonely at times and if you meet someone who sets the sparks going, why jinx it by not being prepared?

Please only engage in safe sex. Make sure you put the rubber on and do not forget to take your pills. These small steps give you relief from bigger troubles like STDs and unwanted pregnancy. If you are brave enough to embark on a solo trip, you are brave and matured enough to say “No” if you are not interested. Do the right thing.

Make New Friends

Whether you believe it or not, there are plenty of places around the world where a traveler gets treated like a celebrity. In many places, it is actually easy to make friends; be it an Airbnb or a hostel or a resort. On your way, you meet fellow female travelers. The bond you share becomes stronger when you share your journey and experiences.

This International Women’s Day, add your story to the collection of stories about brave women making bold decisions. Do something and share your stories that will inspire other girls to explore the world on their own.

International Women’s Day

Below are some of the events in March:

1) International Women’s Day Fun Run, Brisbane on March 5th

4) International Women’s Day Walk in Zurich on March 8th

Year End Review and Travel Highlights of 2016

With just a few days left in 2016, there is a lot to review before closing out the year. What happened this year? What were the tourist hotspots? What are the changes in the travel industry? What news made it into the headlines?

All these questions help us to look at our year in review. Now, let us catch up with events of this last year before we leap into the new one.

ZIKA OUTBREAK

The booming tourism industry in the Caribbean (Puerto Rico, Mexico, Brazil, Panama, United States Virgin Islands, Honduras) took a bitter blow when the virus hit.

Since January, travel experts talk about the drastic effect of the Zika Virus on tourism. Those who had tickets for Zika-affected areas canceled their trips and received full refunds. About 26% of travel agents became victims of Zika cancellations.

Throughout the year, Zika made it in the news worldwide. As a result, concerned travelers canceled their trips even though the virus is mild and only infects the pregnant woman.

During the winter season, the $24 billion travel industry in Miami experienced a major setback because of last minute cancellations due to the virus.

TERROR

Brussels By Miguel Discart CC BY-SA 2.0

After the terror attacks in November 2015, 2016 saw a decline in the number of tourists. Cities like Brussels, Nice and German cities witnessed the killing of innocent humans. After the deadly attacks on Paris, the Sodetour chain of restaurants saw a 70% decrease in business.

How much of that is attributable to terrorism we do not know. Regardless, European countries which depend on tourism got disappointed this year. France was primarily affected by the attacks on Paris and Brussels.

The economy had a loss of one billion pounds in business and tax revenue in March. Furthermore, the country saw no growth from April to June.  Most of the declining economy came from hotels and tourism.

GROWTH OF OTAs

The rise of OTAs (online travel agencies) is slumping the profits from direct booking for hotels. OTAs eat away 15%-30% of the cost of booking, which is a nightmare for hotels. Hence, hotels are seeking out new ways to encourage travelers to book directly through them.

Now that commission free booking engines are available, hoteliers save their commission money and spend it on marketing. It is expected that the OTA share in hotel revenue will increase from 14 % in 2010 to 19% in 2017.

Whereas, estimates say that hotel website bookings will get only a 2% increase in the same period.

AHOY AIRBNB

Not only are hotels and OTAs attracting hoards of customers but so is Airbnb. This company helps you find home rentals while you are traveling across the world. If you do not know about it already then you will certainly hear about it in the coming year.

The company has made an income of $12.3 billion this year and is predicted to outsmart all other accommodation companies. Experts comment that it has the potential to elevate its income by 70% in 2017.

Although there are pending lawsuits against this home-sharing company, it is still running successfully. Next year it will have more than 200 cities on its radar.

TSA HEADACHE

The increasing threat to security has caused officials to take extra precautions. A long and tiring pre-check was the bane of travel this past year. Many people did not want to travel unless necessary because of the never-ending TSA Security lines at the airport.

Flights were a nightmare, and plenty of travelers missed their flights. The plight of the passengers was a massive problem. However, there was a blame game between the TSA and the airlines. After May the TSA made adjustments to its security program.

Now getting through the security check is comparatively smooth and quick.

BURYING THE COLD WAR

Press conference, Havana BY Chuck Kennedy BY Public Domain

The U.S. was hopeful at the start of 2016 to forge a friendship with its long-time rival from the Cold War, Cuba. President Obama took initiatives and was the first U.S. President to visit Cuba.

This initiative was the reason Cuba eased its travel restrictions. In June, the first cruise ship since the 1960s traveled from the U.S. to Cuba. The friendly relationship between the two rivals didn’t last long.

In November, as the conclusion of Obama’s term became imminent and with the death of Fidel Castro, the relationship became tenuous once more.
